Springs Jobs Bounce Back ; Unemployment Rate Shows Recovery

The unemployment rate in El Paso County dropped below 5 percent in May for the first time in almost three years. The number, viewed with other recent economic indicators, further shows a recovery is well under way for the local economy.

Bishops Can Decide Communion Stance ; Catholic Political Rift Remains After Meeting

The nation's Roman Catholic bishops, meeting Friday at a spiritual retreat in a Denver suburb, voted overwhelmingly to allow individual bishops to decide whether to deny Communion to Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. The statement, "Catholics in Political Life," was adopted by a 183-6 vote, said conference spokeswoman Sister Mary Ann Walsh.
