Blaze Grows to 1,500 Acres ; 'Mother Nature Winning Right Now,' Fire Official Says

WETMORE - A fire near this rural town nearly tripled in size Friday to 1,500 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 50 homes as flames raced across steep and heavily wooded terrain. The Mason Gulch fire, in the San Isabel National Forest about 30 miles west of Pueblo, was burning in two counties.

Gold Camp Road Will Open If Money Is Found

The U.S. Forest Service announced Friday that it will reopen to traffic a longclosed portion of historic Gold Camp Road -- but only if someone else pays for it. The decision means there are some daunting financial challenges to overcome before a single car winds its way up the twisty, 8.5- mile section of dirt road that was closed when a railroad tunnel it passes through partly collapsed in 1988.
