Bruce's Plea for Measures Rejected ; Judge Lets City Keep Tax Issues Off Ballot
DENVER - A federal judge on Tuesday rebuffed an effort to place two budget-cutting measures on the Colorado Springs Nov. 1 ballot. El Paso County Commissioner Douglas Bruce vowed to keep fighting to place the measures before voters, but he is running out of time, because ballot language goes to the printer this week.
Locals Offer Their Time, Money, Homes to Evacuees
Youngsters sold lemonade to raise money, families offered spare rooms, groups packed donated goods into trucks that volunteers will drive to the Gulf region and government agencies sought to cut red tape as people in the Pikes Peak region found ways to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. About 100 hurricane refugees have been helped by the local branch of the American Red Cross and others have been taken in by family, friends and strangers.
Planned Festival of Pagans Draws Anger in Plains Town
The small eastern plains town of Ramah is simmering with religious tension after a pagan group rented out the American Legion Hall for a festival on Halloween weekend. A Baptist minister tried to rally the town board to stop the gathering, and one woman is circulating a petition demanding that the festival be stopped.
Coloradans Donate Food for Lost Pets
Coloradans are reaching out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, even the four-legged ones. On Monday, a caravan from the Colorado Humane Society arrived at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown, Miss. The seven trucks carried 14,000 pounds of pet food, more than 300 kennels and other donated supplies for storm-displaced pets.
