Police Officer Killed ; Motorist Opens Fire During a Southeast Dui Stop
A Colorado Springs police officer whose passion was getting drunken drivers off the road died Tuesday after being shot while helping two officers with a traffic stop on the city's southeast side. Officer Kenneth Jordan, 32, was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital, less than an hour after being shot several times on Fountain Boulevard near Murray Boulevard.

Public schools in the Pikes Peak region slightly outperformed the state as a whole, but they still have plenty of room for improvement, according to the annual School Accountability Reports released Tuesday. The first flowers to be placed at the shooting scene were white carnations in a paper cone. They came from a woman who met officer Kenneth Jordan two years ago when he helped her cope with a crime against her.
Suspect Had Pleaded Guilty to Felony Eluding
A suspected drunken driver accused of gunning down a Colorado Springs police officer had a threeyear prison sentence hanging over his head, according to court records. Marco Reiner Lee, 25, was identified by Colorado Springs police as the alleged killer in the Monday night slaying of officer Kenneth Jordan on Fountain Boulevard between Murray Boulevard and Jet Wing Drive.
Traffic Stops Always a Danger for Officers
There is no such thing as a "routine" traffic stop, say police officials and law enforcement organizations. "Statistically, traffic stops and domestic disturbances are far and away the most dangerous things police officers do," said Jim Pasco, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Fraternal Order of Police, a police labor organization with 334,000 members.

The fatal shooting of a Colorado Springs police officer Monday night came just as fellow officers were about to mark the anniversary of officer Mark Dabling's death 24 years ago. Dabling was also gunned down while making a traffic stop.
