Winter Training ; for First Time, Pikes Peak Railway Running Year-Round
For the first time in its 116-year history, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is hauling passengers up the side of Pikes Peak throughout the winter. Staff of the local cog extended operations to Christmas about five years ago. It was so successful they decided to keep the operations open during the winter of 2006-07, said Spencer Wren, general manager of the Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway Co.
Utilities Will Open South Slope ; Limited Access Ok'd On Pikes Peak
After more than a century of locked gates, Colorado Springs Utilities said Thursday it will allow trails on the south slope of Pikes Peak. The city-owned utility has been holding public comment meetings since November to draw up rules controlling access to its 28 reservoirs, including seven in a 45,000-acre swath in the city's backyard commonly called the south slope.
26 Ailing Animals Taken Off Property ; 11 Others Dead at Black Forest Home
Twenty-six dehydrated and malnourished animals -- llamas, goats, cows, horses, hens, a sheep and a dog -- were taken this week from a Black Forest property where the carcasses of 11 animals were found. El Paso County sheriff's deputies plan to submit the findings of their investigation today to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether to charge Debra Everet with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
