Obituary

Traditional flavors

"Arharn" is Thai for "food," and it is a fitting title for this humble, wholesome, well-priced, delicious little restaurant that recently sprang up near the Super Target on Powers Boulevard. Dishes such as steaming-hot, spicy lemongrass soup swimming with shrimp and fresh chopped cilantro ($6), and deep-orange Panang Curry - tart with fresh basil and kaffir lime leaves - offer traditional Thai food without flourishes or shortcuts.

Match savory, sweet crepes with gelato

Caterer Blandine Brutel, aka Chez Blandine, has cooked up a great deal with Frank and Merlyn Noncon, owners of Noncon's Gelatoria, 8816 N. Union Blvd. It's an international-cuisine moment: Have savory or sweet French crepes prepared by Chez Blandine, and get a scoop of Italian gelato.

UCCS FILM FESTIVAL FEATURES ART, DINNER, AWARDS CEREMONY

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs kicks off its eighth annual Student Short Film Festival on Saturday. Boy, they sure know how to make a guy feel old. When my friends and I helped launch the inaugural festival, I wore several hats, including judge and moderator. Everyone involved did. It was a fledgling operation, short on experience but long on passion, juggling only a handful of submissions and screening them before an equally sparse audience.

THEATREWORKS MANAGES TO MAKE EXPANSIVE 'CYRANO' FEEL INTIMATE

Cyrano de Bergerac did it all. Philosopher, soldier, musician, poet - he could dispatch a hundred armed men with a few quick strokes of his sword or a hundred pompous aristocrats with a few quick strokes of his wit. But he had one flaw - and it wasn't his oversize nose.

'GHOSTS' IS 1 MCCONAUGHEY MOVIE NOT TO FEAR

You know you're not expecting much from a movie when you and your fellow critics are taking bets beforehand on how many minutes into the film Matthew McConaughey will be shirtless. It's good to know there's still a surprise or two around the bend these days. As far as the mightily abused McConaughey romantic comedies go, "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" is actually one of his better outings.

Heart sliced out from 'wolverine'

Origins stories are supposed to be of such momentous mythological dynamism that they explain everything that radiates from them - characters' histories, personalities and even guiding motivations. They are our road map to everything that comes after. Our decoder rings. Our Genesis. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has no such density at its core, no gravity, nothing to explain why we should care one whit about this man and his problems.
