Springs Might Need More Money -- $4.4m -- For Deal
Colorado Springs taxpayers may have to cough up an additional $1.9 million this year -- and at least $2.5 million more in the future -- to meet the terms of the renegotiated agreement to keep the U.S. Olympic Committee in the city. At issue is the money needed to buy the former Colorado Springs Utilities gasoperations building, which would be used to house several USOC national governing bodies.
Plan Would Allow Access to Public for First Time
Colorado Springs Utilities may allow hiking, horse riding, picnicking and limited fishing and bicycling in the South Slope watershed on Pikes Peak, a remote and scenic area that has been off- limits to the public for more than a century. Anti-tax advocate Douglas Bruce has sought to distance himself from three statewide initiatives that could limit the ability of local and state governments to raise taxes or borrow money. But records filed with the Secretary of States Office show that eight people who gathered thousands of signatures to get the measures on the November ballot lived in an apartment house owned by Bruce in Colorado Springs.
