MONUMENT - Jokes among seventh-grade boys escalated to racial slurs, harassment and, finally, a black student lashing out at a Creekside Middle School classmate, according to a police report issued Thursday.

The March 6 incident led to misdemeanor charges against the boys, including the target of the slurs, and it touched a nerve among some civil rights leaders. The Denver office of the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy group, called for a thorough investigation.
