Summary


In the 1870s, as Gen. William Palmer and his wealthy friends were creating "Little London" on the plains, Adeline Hornbek was carving out a small but successful ranch on the other side of Pikes Peak -- by herself and with four kids to feed.

Hornbek is one of dozens of women -- no one knows for sure how many -- who broke gender barriers and stereotypes to establish homesteads throughout Colorado. On Saturday, historians and rangers at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument will explore in a public seminar how Hornbek and other pioneering women used the Homestead Act of 1862 to create a future -- and a place in Colorado history.
