The scientist whose work led to federal protection for the Preble's meadow jumping mouse now says his findings were flawed. But a federal agency spokeswoman said Friday the government is a long way from removing the mouse from a list of protected species.

Sharon Rose said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is aware of a late March e-mail in which Philip Krutzsch, who first classified the Preble's meadow jumping mouse as a distinct subspecies in 1954, says he thinks the mouse is no different from a species found in several northwestern states.
