Academy Would Do Well to Include Muslim Response

Summary


The organizers of the conference at the Air Force Academy seem not to have taken up the recommendation in The Gazette's Feb. 6 Our View, "Shushing Christians," to "Bring on the Muslims," so I would like to provide a perspective from local American citizens who happen to be Muslim.

The fight against terrorism is too important to be approached casually and haphazardly, and this conference seems to be off the mark. If the sole credentials of the main speakers are that they did not know enough about Islam to reject acts of terrorism, and lacked the common sense to refuse to participate in senseless acts of violence, that hardly qualifies them as "experts," rather the opposite. There are Muslim religious scholars and academics in the U.S. and Muslim countries who would have done a far better job of helping the cadets understand the underlying issues that spawn terrorism. This seems to be like having ex-gang members explain what they were doing in the gang, which does not help much in eliminating the underlying problems that spawn gangs.
