After spending 36 years building the largest accounting firm in Colorado Springs, Brenda Smith is retiring to head the staff of one of the city's largest churches.

Smith, 55, retires Oct. 31 from BKD LLP and will become leader Jan. 1 of First Presbyterian Church's 120-person staff. She said the job was created to help the 5,000-member church become more focused on helping others, such as building homes for Habitat for Humanity and helping the families of troops deployed to Iraq.
