An Air Force lieutenant colonel who made a name for herself challenging a Pentagon policy will pass up an Air Force Academy job to become the first female fighter squadron commander.

Martha McSally in 2001 challenged the Defense Department's order that servicewomen in Saudi Arabia wear head-to-toe coverings called abayas over uniforms when off base. Her suit argued the order interfered with service members' religious freedom and prompted legislation banning commanders from forcing women to wear abayas.
