A measure co-sponsored by Rep. Joel Hefley that would protect volunteer firefighters' and medics' regular, paying jobs when they respond during a national emergency may have a big effect in the Pikes Peak region.

Although local officials said they knew of no one who had been fired while helping with a disaster, El Paso County has nearly 1,000 volunteer firefighters in 21 fire-protection districts.
