He was a breech baby, born bottom first. Breech babies commonly are delivered by Caesarean section, but in this case, Hagan says, "he was too eager. He was already on his way out."

The delivery went fine, but the baby is premature, born at 29 weeks; full term is around 40 weeks. Hagan attended the delivery and now she and three nurses surround the tiny newborn. They are giving him surfactant, which helps premature babies' struggling lungs.
