A Fort Carson soldier on trial this week for waging what prosecutors say was a "reign of terror" in an Iraqi town was trying to keep order in a war zone, his lawyer said.
Capt. Shawn L. Martin, who served in Iraq with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in 2003, faces more than four decades in prison on charges he used a pistol, his fists and a baseball bat he dubbed the "Iraqi beater" to threaten and abuse civilians and his troops in the western desert town of Rutbah.
