Lawrence "Chip" Johnson was visibly amazed at the groceries he was scouting out on a recent trip to Dollar General at 1785 S. Eighth St. A 1-pound canned ham, $2.15. A 15-ounce can of diced tomatoes, 50 cents.

"We (he and his wife) have shopped at dollar stores for stuff like greeting cards and wrapping paper," said Johnson, chef and owner of The Warehouse restaurant, "but we haven't ever bought consumables before. I'm impressed with the amount of different foods I'm seeing here and especially impressed with the prices. I'm going to tell my wife about this."

It 's no secret that grocery prices have been going through the roof, and there's little hope that they'll go down dramatically any time soon. Milk, eggs, bread - and the cost of rice has soared to such an extent that some big-box grocery stores put a limit on the amount shoppers can buy.
