The Pikes Peak region emerged Thursday from a brief ice age that descended Monday, bringing the lowest temperatures in almost a decade.

Wednesday's low of 15 below zero, around midnight, shattered Dec. 7 records and was the lowest recorded temperature for Colorado Springs since Feb. 3, 1996, when the low was minus 18. Cripple Creek bottomed out Wednesday at 22 below.
