Kit Carson, population 253, is one of 48 Colorado towns with fewer than 300 residents. It's a ranching community, where calving takes priority in the springtime, where only the main street is paved, where the kindergarten-through-grade-12 school is the town's social center, where cars are always dusty and pickup trucks are better suited anyway.

In many ways, Kit Carson is similar to many small towns that struggle with dwindling populations. There's no movie theater or video rental shop here. No public library. No ethnic restaurants. No nightclubs. No Laundromats. No doctor, dentist or veterinarian.
