Cookbook Reflects Roots of American Indians

Summary


American Indians forced onto reservations in the late 1800s had never seen white flour, one of the commodities given to them by the U.S. government. But they found ways to use it, and the other foods foreign to them, to sustain themselves.

Fry bread -- dough pounded into flat rounds and fried -- is among the dishes created from those commodities. Recipes for it are among those in the Native American Women's Association's "A Taste of Nations" cookbook.
