As a van full of mountain bikers hurtled up Monarch Pass on a recent morning to the start of the Monarch Crest Trail, Salida local Tom Purvis gave riders directions through the mountains. Unfortunately the spandex-clad Sacagawea wasn't having much luck.

"It can be confusing. There used to be a sign, but someone stole it. So after 12 miles, take a right, a left, a right and a left, and watch out for the phantom trail," he said.
