The 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office has cleared El Paso County commissioners and top staff of wrongdoing involving allegations of campaign kickbacks and questionable business dealings stemming from a complicated real estate deal, Commission Chairwoman Amy Lathen said Thursday.

The DA's inquiry arose from emails that County Attorney Bill Louis sent last week to county commissioners. In them, Louis expressed his concerns, one of which was that the owner of a business condominium the county wants to lease had written campaign checks his attorney said he would present when the deal closed. The Gazette obtained Louis' emails, and Louis confirmed Thursday that he wrote them.
