In the vast majority of cases, the lump is cut out or otherwise removed, lest it evolve into something even more life threatening. And such is also the case with many diseases afflicting our flora and fauna. Some plants or animals must sometimes be sacrificed in order to prevent a breakout from becoming a plague.

Not long ago this might have been a commonly shared understanding in America. But the logic of such actions no longer seems to compute for some, including, apparently, the residents on East Platte Avenue trying to block the removal of trees believed to be stricken with Dutch elm disease.
