Today, Christians around the world celebrate what they believe is a miracle central to the entire faith: that a young preacher named Jesus, after being put to death by crucifixion, rose from the dead and thereby gained for believers complete victory over the forces that had sought to destroy him.

Those who put Jesus to death represented the most respectable and authoritative elements of the state and society that existed at the time. According to the Bible's account, the official leaders of the Jewish religion demanded that the Roman secular authorities put this heretic to death. In doing so, both authorities violated all the principles of justice that supposedly underlay their societies. No crime could be found, let alone a crime worthy of death.
