Entertainment usually means fun, but in 2004 the industry more often mirrored the tumultuous events of the workaday world.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" brought election-year politics to the multiplex, an ill-conceived halftime show overshadowed the Super Bowl, filmgoers flocked to "The Passion of the Christ" and TV viewers swarmed "Desperate Housewives." Trying to make sense out of the contradictions and complications of entertainment in 2004 would take a good part of 2005, but let's recap the, um, highlights before we put them behind us:
