Fred Marjerrison led the Widefield girls to the 4A Metro League championship and their first regional championship in school history on the way to a seventh-place finish in the state meet, tops among area teams. For his efforts, Marjerrison is The Gazette's Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year.

When practice started in February, Marjerrison saw a team that finished 24th in the state the year before with "a bunch of freshmen." Shot putter Joy Warrington was the only returning state placer.
