The space shuttle Discovery made a spectacular July 4 launch in only the second shuttle mission since the 2003 destruction during re- entry of the shuttle Columbia. Discovery's seven-member crew closely inspected the spacecraft for "flecks of insulating foam [that] flew off the orbiter's problem-plagued fuel tank," Reuters reported July 5, but "Discovery looked to be in good shape." More recent reports from the shuttle indicate the craft and crew are good to go for re- entry.

The Independence Day launch is a good time to discuss the independence of future space missions from government control and the federal treasury. Current Bush administration plans are to retire the remaining three shuttles by 2010, with 16 more missions during that time.
