DENVER - Paul Kariya is hardly the first hockey player to experience the awkward feeling of playing against a former team for the first time.

But considering the strange circumstances that brought Kariya from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to the Colorado Avalanche, there was a small sense of relief for Kariya after he scored a goal in the Avalanche's 3-1 victory on Tuesday at Pepsi Center.
