A judge Friday handed down a mandatory life-without-parole sentence to a gang member who gunned down a rival in 1999.

Fourth Judicial District Judge Steven Pelican sentenced Derrick Turner, 29, for the first-degree murder conviction a jury agreed on last month. He also gave Turner 35 years in prison for a conspiracy conviction, to be served at the same time.
