State Sen. Doug Lamborn won the 5th Congressional District Republican primary Tuesday on the strength of the first votes cast - - absentee ballots sent out nearly a month ago.

Late in the evening, neither Lamborn nor rival Jeff Crank, retiring Congressman Joel Hefley's former chief of staff, could afford to be jubilant or downcast. But it appeared Lamborn had edged Crank, a former chamber of commerce vice president, grabbing 15,011 votes -- 27 percent -- while Crank captured 14,096, 25 percent.
