What began as a polite contest for El Paso County sheriff between two law enforcement professionals has gotten personal in recent weeks, with accusations flying that the incumbent is dodging debates and the challenger broke federal election laws.

It's a race Sheriff Terry Maketa brought on by announcing in January that the job had lost its allure for him and he wouldn't be seeking a third term. That opened the door for Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk, who quickly leapt into the void and declined to step aside after Maketa changed his mind in February and decided to run.
