We've all seen ski racers screaming down a mountain, but the hottest new sport requires racing up the mountain, too.

Randonee (French for "tour") racers use special equipment to scale the slopes, then zoom back down, often gaining more than 4,000 vertical feet over a 4-mile race. Colorado's randonee race series, the Colorado Ski Mountaineering Cup, holds its first race of the year Jan. 19 at Snowmass.
