Public health officials last year investigated 178 restaurant complaints -- triple the number received in 2005 -- and also responded to nearly a dozen outbreaks of illnesses in area nursing homes.

Health workers also conducted a tuberculosis investigation that involved testing 222 people and have been battling an increase in sexually transmitted diseases.
