Depending how you look at it, the new baby gorilla at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo either has no mom or a whole bunch of moms.

The as-yet-unnamed baby boy was born five weeks ago to Kwisha, a 13-year-old Western lowland gorilla. But Kwisha hasn't been fulfilling her motherly duties, leaving it up to a dedicated group of current and former zoo workers and volunteers to provide aroundthe-clock care.

"It's really good to have the baby and know that he's doing well," said Heidi Genter, a primate keeper at the zoo. "But it's a real bummer that we have to hand-raise him. It's a lot better if they (the gorillas) do it, because then he totally learns to be a gorilla from the beginning."
