Nina Binder Kupfer Hedman, daughter of Christopher and Lou Danna Binder, was born in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and raised in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Nina, the seventh of nine children, graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and received her Masters Degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania. She served in the Red Cross during WWII in southeastern England, London, and Paris. Nina was in charge of setting up a recreation center for the newly released prisoners of Camp Lucky Strike. Special Services then selected Nina to be the Recreation Director for the Far East Command. She organized recreation programs for the troops in Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Korea. General LeMay called upon Nina to design and oversee the operation of the recreation centers for all SAC bases worldwide. She met Col. Donald Kupfer, stationed at the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, and they were married in 1957 and moved to Colorado Springs. Nina received numerous awards and citations for her service in the Red Cross and the Special Services, and the Women's War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, bears her name.
After moving to Colorado Springs, Nina modeled for Ambercombie and Fitch, Montaldos, and the Grey Rose and was active in a number of civic organizations, notably the Longfellow PTA, C.S. Parks and Recreation Department, the Fine Arts Center, and the Pikes Peak Library Board. Later she taught English at Wasson High School and sponsored a national award-winning yearbook. She fascinated students with her love of literature and her wonderful retellings of her worldwide adventures. Nina and Don were gracious hosts who welcomed all to their beautiful home filled with Far Eastern art. Col. Kupfer died in 1982. She married Carl Hedman (now deceased) in 1986.See the full content of this document
