Summary


Words cannot express the depth of gratitude most Americans feel toward the men and women who risked their lives and, along with their families, put life on hold to fight in Iraq.

On Thursday, the last of Fort Carson soldiers who survived the war returned home. As Gazette military reporter Tom Roeder explained, more than 100 soldiers from the post's 62nd Engineer company spend their final days in Iraq sweeping the highways that lead out of the country for roadside bombs. By doing so, they ensured that final American convoys were able to leave Iraq safely. It was not the kind of work most of us would like to do, but it's the kind of work that had to be done to preserve American lives.
