DENVER - The chief of the Colorado State Patrol, facing a firestorm of criticism from Colorado's cycling community, backpedaled Friday from a plan to cap the number of bicyclists in organized group rides.

Col. Mark Trostel just a few days ago said the 2,500-rider limit was etched in stone because it was a safety issue. But Friday, the chief delayed implementation of the rider cap so that various stakeholders can meet and come up with a better solution.
