Pivot Point? ; Iraq Study Group Could Help Clarify Options

Summary


We don't normally pay much attention to the findings of special task forces and blue ribbon commissions: in Washington, they too frequently come up with "findings" that are predictable and pedestrian, become another excuse for inaction or provide fodder for partisan sniping. But given the importance of bringing the Iraq war to an honorable and respectable conclusion, we are hoping something significant will come of the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group, which releases its report today.

Not that we believe there are simple or painless ways out of Iraq -- we should steel ourselves to the fact that there are none. But we see hopeful signs that events may be conspiring to stir new thinking.
