LONG BEACH, Calif. - Gary Hall Jr. wore a black boxing robe with the hood up as he walked to the start block of the men's 100-meter freestyle race at the U.S. Olympic swimming team trials Sunday night. Stopping at his lane, the eight-time Olympic medalist warmed up with a quick combination of punches.

Too bad he was late answering the bell. The anticipated duel between two-time Olympian Hall and archrival Jason Lezak never materialized because of Hall's poor start -- one so bad some in the sellout crowd of 10,016 gasped.
