Sales, Use Taxes Plummet in June

Summary


The Colorado Springs economy showed little sign of improvement, as city sales- and use-tax collections fell in June by the largest percentage in five months and spending declined at all types of retailers except grocery and discount stores.

Sales- and use-tax collections for June, which reflect sales in May, declined 14.38 percent from a year ago to $8.93 million, the largest monthly drop since collections fell 15.82 percent in January, the city's Revenue and Collection Division reported Tuesday. Some of the June decline resulted from an unusually large amount of one-time revenue the city collected a year ago after auditing merchants. When that revenue is subtracted, collections were off 11.71 percent.
