TO OUR READERS: This is the third of 17 chapters of a holiday story that runs through Dec. 25 in The Gazette's Life, Food and Out There sections. The story also will be available online at gazette.com/cele brate. Larry Benson looked outside at the darkness, then glanced at his watch. It was after 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The few others who had actually bothered to work today had left hours ago, giddy and filled with the Christmas spirit. He sighed. How could everyone be so carefree? It had been many months since the layoffs, but company revenue wasn't exactly skyrocketing and, for him anyway, the specter of another round of cuts was always there.

He grimaced, looking as if he were sucking on a sour candy. He'd like to think that staying late on this night of all nights would do him some good. But since there were no bosses around to see him working, that probably wasn't the case.
