Contemporary cobblers have a saying that their biggest competitor is the trash can. Those words are achingly true for most in this age- old trade, including Lonnie Brown. The owner of Andy's Shoe Repair, 1622 E. Pikes Peak Ave., has watched rival shops join the mounting refuse heap of businesses becoming antiquated by the age of technology.

"We're a dying industry," he said of stores that specialize in shoe repair, shaking his head.
