The Christmas shopping season got off to a strong start in Colorado Springs with a 6.6 percent jump in sales tax collections during December.

The taxes collected in December come from sales made during November at stores, restaurants, hotels and other places that collect sales tax. Collections that reflect December sales a key selling month for many retailers won't be reported until early next month.
