On Election Day 1882, the largest earthquake ever recorded in Colorado hit Denver. Buildings shook. Ceilings cracked. Republicans blamed Democrats.

It wasn't a coincidence that the quake hit just as a Democrat won the race for governor for the first time, The Longmont Herald suggested. It was "probably nature's protest... uttered at the time of closing the polls Tuesday evening when... she could no longer control her feelings, but uttered a groan of anguish which caused the very mountains to tremble."
