Letters and packages mailed in Colorado Springs could take an extra day to be delivered locally if the Postal Service's processing center at Fountain and Academy boulevards is scaled back as part of a nationwide downsizing.

Postal Service spokesman Ron Perry said the Colorado Springs center, which employs about 350 and processes about 800,000 pieces of mail daily, is among the 250 facilities the federal agency is considering closing as part of sweeping changes in how mail is delivered.
