According to a flurry of articles in the Gazette from 1929, there is another, more colorful possibility. The late J.G. Hiestand, manager of the Summit House, related the legend of a miner from Cripple Creek who attempted a shortcut across the face of the peak on his way to visit his sweetheart in Manitou Springs.
